The 40th Anniversary of May 1960 Encirclement of HUAC (House UnAmerican Activities Committee) by 5000 students, leading to its demise. The 43rd Anniversary of founding of SLATE and the Awakening of the Campus.

Friday May 12, 2000:  

3:00 p.m. Arrival and opening with informal activities

  • Literature Tables up

* Community bulletin board with prospective areas of interest to be explored on

Sat. afternoon in workshops or panels. (Special one for young people); People peruse the board, suggest their own workshops or panels and/or sign up to participate in some of those that are listed. 

before dinner, leading up to dinner: Marv Sternberg and Rachel Garlin will lead us in SLATE songs, from a SLATE song-sheet newly discovered.

6 p.m. Dinner: Lively dinner conversation at each table. We will divide people up among the tables, making sure that each table has a cross section of SLATE generations and people that don’t already know each other well.

Some suggestions for dinner table questions:

    • What made you decide to come to this reunion?
    • What is one event you remember that you would want included in our story when it is written
    • What is one event you remember that you would want included in our story when it is written

7:00 p.m. Opening and welcome keynote/dialogue: 
Julianne Morris, Ken Cloke and Peter Franck

After dinner: Marvin and Rachel lead us in a few more SLATE songs, then party, yak it up and retire (at earlier hours, no doubt, than during our SLATE years.)

Saturday:  May 13

8:30 a.m. Breakfast

9:30 a.m. SLATE History Panel: Vic Garlin to chair, introduce the history by speaking on: the pre-TASC period (1949 to 1956)

Kate Coleman, Jo Freeman - HUAC to FSM: 1960-1964

Mike Miller: Ruminations Prompted by the SLATE reunion. (15 minutes)

10:45 a.m. Break up into small groups for discussion. We will reconvene the same groups as met over dinner Friday evening. Question to start discussion: What issues has all this brought up for you, personally and politically?

11:45 a.m. Reconvene in General Assembly, [same chair as panel], Questions and open mike comments.

12:30 p.m. Lunch: A leisurely barbecue at poolside, from 12:30 to 2:30.

2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Special gatherings, per Friday afternoon sign-up. 
Requested and suggested gatherings include:

  1. Intergenerational gathering: Invitations have been extended to SLATE veterans’ offspring and young adult grandchildren, as well as Spice and S.O.’s. Some of our memories will be experienced by them as new information
  2. Unfinished Business (issues and feelings from the SLATE days, the last reunion, other).
  3. The counterculture.
  4. Feminism/SLATE
  5. Cuba: the Socialist Future.
  6. Others, depending on and whatever got a show of interest by sign-ups on the bulletin board.

4:00 to 5 p.m. General Assembly: share experiences from small groups (but eschewing formal reports). Chaired by Ken Cloke.

6:00 p.m. Dinner.

After dinner, party! With music..

9:30 a.m. Panel: What Is To Be Done, Undone and Done Better?
